Zero Balancing is a simple yet powerful method which integrates a Western anatomical view of structure with Eastern concepts of energy (subtle movement). Particular focus is given to the forces within the skeleton as it is our most dense structure and supports our body "beneath" the winds of daily change. CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system. This craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Imbalances in this system can cause sensory, motor or neurological disabilities. John Upledger, D.O., O.M.M. developed this non-invasive therapeutic model. Cranial Fluid Dynamics is an expansion and outgrowth of CranialSacral Therapy although it varies in its execution. Based on the use of Ontological Kinesiology, the foundation of Cranial Fluid Dynamics is an understanding of the various forces present both within and around us as human beings. An understanding of these life forces affords the practitioner the opportunity to understand and palpate how the fluid system is altered and disturbed not by structural and emotional dysfunction, but by human consciousness. It is the understanding of the differing levels of consciousness and the forces that are induced that alters the fundamental rhythm within the body. The cranial rhythmic impulse [CRI], the heart of cranial osteopathy, is a signature of the active and dynamic state of the body and its well being. These forces alter both structure (the neuromusculoskeletal system) and function (physiology). This may result in an aberrant state, pathophysiology, and later in disease or pathology. Here, the fluid system of the body is emphasized as an interface for feedback and a medium for change. Solihin Thom, D.O. is an osteopathic practitioner originally from the U.K. who is now based in Portland, Oregon who has developed cranial and kinesiological approaches to a high level of refinement. Ontological Kinesiology is s system, which utilizes clinical kinesiology (a method of muscle testing) as feedback along with precise hand positions (mudras) to pinpoint the actual problem a particular client is experiencing. This information comes across as the "sequence of events" (0ntology) that creates our state of being, which bring us to our present dysfunction. The sequencing of these hand positions likewise elicits a treatment protocol to open our inner growth. It is based on the understanding that within each of us is everything we need to know about ourselves. SomatoEmotional Release is a therapeutic process which expands on the principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of the residual affects of trauma. The body often retains the imprint of physical forces from accidents, injuries and emotional shock in the form of an "energetic cyst". Through SER, these negative patterns can be brought to consciousness and released. Visceral Manipulation enhances the normal mobility and tissue motion of organs in the visceral system. These delicate manual techniques assist the synchronistic movement these structures, improving their physiologic function both locally and for the entire body. Muscle Energy Technique is a direct yet non-invasive manual therapy used to normalize joint dysfunction and increase range of motion. Focusing on releasing tight muscles, it utilizes the action of the stretch receptors and their neurological connections to Strain/Counterstrain utilizes sustained passive positioning to release hypertonic neuromuscular regions. Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing used for thousands of years to balance and harmonize life energy. Acupuncture is used to treat illness as well as to anticipate and prevent disease. Acupuncturists focus on determining fundamental causes of a person's difficulty, taking the whole person into account, including body, mind and spirit. Acupuncture is based on natural laws which describe the movement of life energy (called Chi or Qi) in nature and in the body. This life energy flows through the body along precise pathways. When the Chi in the body is balanced and flows properly, we are healthy. When the Chi is imbalanced, we experience distress and illness. Acupuncturists are trained to detect these imbalances in the Chi. Through the use of hair-thin disposable needles inserted into the acupuncture points or the use of heat at those points (moxabustion), energy is brought into greater harmony which assists your body's ability to heal itself. Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy. It can help in a wide range of conditions - from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health. Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu sessions help to prevent the build up of stress in our daily lives. The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that vital energy (known as Ki in Japanese) flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians. For many different reasons Ki can stop flowing freely and this then produces a symptom. The Alexander Technique looks at the habits that govern how we view ourselves and use ourselves -- habits that develop at an early age and are reinforced as we grow older. We move around all day without thinking about the body -- straining the musculature, compressing the spine, and making ourselves shorter. Our bodies are a low priority until something breaks down and draws our attention. The Alexander Technique is like an owner's manual for the body; it teaches you to use the body according to its inherent design. You learn to notice and change poor postural habits in order to restore coordination and poise. It relieves pain and improves performance in artists and athletes. The Technique gives you tools to take charge and move beyond your limitations in everything you endeavor to achieve. Rolfing is the name given to Dr. Ida Rolf's method of massage, which transcends chiropractic in that it is based on the notion that emotional as well as physical health depends upon being properly aligned. Dr. Rolf claimed she found a correlation between muscular tension and pent up emotions. In Rolfing, alignment must be of much more than just the spine. To be healthy, according to Rolfers, you must align your head, ankles, hips, thorax, pelvis, knees, shoulders, ears, etc., in just the right way or else the evils of gravity will be felt. By being properly aligned, gravity enhances personal energy leading to a healthy body and emotional state. The McKenzie method is an evaluation and treatment methodology developed by a New Zealand physical therapist, Robin McKenzie. His assessment of spinal problems relies on the effect movement has on pain which permits the development of an individualized exercise program for each patient. The philosophy focuses on the recurrent nature of back/neck pain and teaches patients to prevent or self-treat through postural correction and exercise. I am targeting people who have been utilizing yoga or tai chi, who realize that changes on a somatic (body) level supports change in overall well being, of heart, mind and spirit. I am targeting people who want a manual approach to healing and PT. I am targeting people who are well but want to be "more well", who are hoping to increase and improve their capacity and skill. I often work with physicians, professional musicians, dancers and high functioning professional people who want to optimize their own performance. Often I am the last of a chain of various types of therapies that then have tried without success.
